The Web Science Trust Network of Research Laboratories: Developing global research collaborations in Web Science

by Wendy Hall (Managing Director) and Jim Hendler (Chair), Web Science Trust
9:30 to 11:00 the 12th of November
University of Lyon, 1st floor, room 103, 92 rue Pasteur 69007 Lyon

The Web Science Trust (WST) grew out of the Web Science Research Initiative (WSRI), which was a collaboration between MIT and the University of Southampton to establish a new research discipline of Web Science to study the evolution of the Web from an interdisciplinary socio-technical perspective - how is the Web changing society and how do we change it? WSRI was announced in 2006. It’s founding directors were Tim Berners-Lee, Wendy Hall, Nigel Shadbolt and Danny Weitzner, soon joined by Jim Hendler from RPI. In order to incorporate institutions other than MIT and Southampton, WST was set up in 2009 as a not-for profit organisation to support the growth of Web Science research and education around the world. Since it is impossible to properly undertake such research from a single geopolitical or cultural perspective, one of the most significant activities within WST has been the development of WSTNet, a network of major research laboratories across the world who are undertaking serious research in the area of Web Science to promote amongst other things student exchanges, collaborative research and information exchange between the labs in the network. This talk will describe the web science research agenda and the aims of WSTNet in more detail. Why would you want /need to be part of this community? - come and find out.
